Kawah Ijen Miners

In East Java on the slopes of the Kawah Ijen volcano carrying tens of kilos of sulphur in baskets on their shoulders is a heavy daily task and harsh and unhealthy life for the miners. Two to three times a day they climb the mountain, and then make the steep descent into the crater of the volcano, negotiating with dangerous gasses originating from the crater, to harvest the sulphur down by the crater lake.
